Arizona Rough Riders General Trail Ratings
Trip notices on the club event calendar typically include a trail rating. This rating represents the trip leader's best judgement of the challenge level of the event, using a scale of 1 to 5 as defined below.

Contact the trip leader regarding specific obstacles and difficulty for individual trips. The Arizona Rough Riders trail rating baseline vehicle is a stock, Jeep like vehicle, 30" tires and several inches of ground clearance.

1. Improved dirt roads, such as fire roads. Passable by most 2-wheel drive vehicles.

2. Unimproved dirt roads. Pot holes, minor wash-outs, medium size rocks, mud holes. Higher ground clearance recommended. 4-wheel drive helpful.

3. Difficult trail: Loose gravel, large pot holes, steep inclines, large rocks. 4-wheel drive required. Possible with stock vehicle. Aggressive tread and low air pressure recommended. Higher than stock ground clearance advisable. Low range gears used often. Moderate experience and driving skill advised. Likely paint damage, possible rocker-panel damage.

4. More difficult trail: Very rugged terrain. Loose gravel, large pot holes, steep inclines, boulders, possibly all combined. Low-range 4-wheel drive necessary. Difficult for stock vehicles. Higher than stock ground clearance required. Lockers or limited-slip differentials highly recommended. Aggressive tread and low air pressure required. Above average off-highway driving skill required. At least one member of the party should have a high-lift jack. A winch could also be helpful. Likely paint damage, possible vehicle body and/or mechanical damage.

5. Most difficult trail: Extremely rugged terrain. Very steep inclines, large boulders, potentially dangerous situations. Not possible for stock vehicles. High level of off-highway driving skill required. Highly modified vehicle required, including lift, lockers, and over-sized tires. Likely paint damage, possible vehicle body and/or mechanical damage. Possibility of rollover. At least one member of the party should have a winch.
